Message from Governor Vicki December 6

Soroptimists,

December 10th is just a few days away.  Why is this important?  It's the day we are invited/challenged to stand up for human rights. According to the United Nations website, Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10th. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe December 10th of each year as Human Rights Day.

Traditionally, each Soroptimist International President selects a project benefiting women and girls in desperate need. This is commonly referred to as the December 10th Appeal.  SI President Yvonne Simpson has chosen the women and girls of Nepal that suffered in the earthquakes of 2015.  Her project is aptly named "Educate to Lead: Nepal 2015-2017 with the goal of providing educational opportunities to rebuild their lives after the earthquakes.  This appeal asks you to support the project by donating on December 10th to the project.  The funds collected are expected to cover several projects in Nepal with 3 being funded already.  Our own Sierra Nevada Region SI Truckee Meadows club was one of the recipients for their Nepal project and received a cash award to continue their work in Nepal.

For information about President Yvonne's Appeal, please visit the Soroptimist International webpage here http://www.soroptimistinternational.org/appeal/an-introduction.

One of my goals for this biennium is to have each club participate in the "international" aspect of our organization.  I talked about this at my installation and again at the Fall District meetings and I plan on continuing to bring international opportunities to the members.  If you, as a member or as a club, would like to donate on December 10th, your donations will need to be sent to Soroptimist International of the Americas.

Among a few other attributes, our international reach is what brought me to Soroptimist.

In Soroptimist service....
Governor Vicki
